Nurture versus nature is a debate that is far from settled, nurture refers to all the genes and hereditary factors that influence who we are, from our physical appearance and our personality characteristics. Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships and our surrounding cultures. Even today there are many branches of psychology that verse each other. In the past, experts have argued that nature was the key role because it means the fundamentals of life. As other experts argue that nature is the key role because it means all environmental behaviors. But today some have recognized that both sides play a critical role in the debate. The debate between nurture versus nature is one of the oldest debates in its psychological history, the debate sits through genetic inheritance and environmental factors for human development. The believers of this view that all of our characteristics and behaviors are all a part of evolution.
There are many examples of this debate such as when a person achieves tremendous academic success, did they do so because they were genetically predisposed to be successful or was it a result of an enriched environment? If a man abuses his wife and kids, is it because he was exposed to this behavior? Nature could be the cause of some genetic diseases such as bipolar and depression, and other things like height, hair color, and eye color. These types of influences have a strong biological component, but they are influenced by the lifestyle.
Researches have found a way that nurture and nature interact. Perfect pitch is the ability to detect the pitch of a musical tone without any references. It has been proven that this ability tends to run in families and believe that it might be tied to a single gene. Researches have also discovered that possessing this gene alone is not enough to develop this ability. Instead, they realized that training the musical pitch as a child will help improve the hereditary traits in the future. Height is another example that interacts with nature and nurture. A child might come from a family where everyone is tall and in his future, he might inherit these traits with nature and nurture effects. However, if he grows up in a bad environment, he might not receive these genes when it gets older. So basically nature and nurture both work together as a whole to improve human personality.
Throughout psychology the debate between nature and nurture has stirred up lots of controversies. Today experts believe that nature and nurture both have a role for human personality, but the debate still rages on in many other debates such as homosexuality and influences on intelligence, and many other debates happening in the world today. People are beginning to realize how much hereditary influence or environmental influence is not the right approach. But in reality, there will never be a way to put both nurture and nature together it will always be nature versus nurture.
