Believe none of what you hear, and half of what you see. More than ever, in today’s society, it seems more difficult to find facts or the absolute truth. The media’s reputation has been flawed in the past years, because the outlets we look at today for information steer more toward entertainment than news coverage. Media bias is becoming more significant throughout the nation with the advancement of technology. The media is influential to many of American citizens’ viewpoint on politics and use bias to alter the public opinion. The media outlets such as newspapers, magazines, radio, and television often leave out one side of the article or a series of articles over a period of time, which is called bias by omission. Most sources employ it when they leave out information that would not be favorable to support liberal or conservative claims or beliefs.
Fox News is a source of bias by omission. Fox News typically looks at the issues from a conservative view and was the main source for 40% of Trump supporters during the 2016 election. It has also been deemed as the least most accurate new cable source. An investigation occurred into Trump’s campaign ties with Russia after the 2016 election, but Fox News rarely gave this issue cable coverage. They are essentially the marketing department for Republicans.
CNN News favor liberals over conservatives, and most notably has been known for bashing President Donald Trump. This has ruined some their credibility and factuality when providing news. When CNN aired in the month of December 2018, they verbally attacked President Trump, saying he called reporters “stupid, nasty, and racist.” That statement was not fact, it was a response to the reporter’s questions by Trump. The viewership and ratings of CNN have increased significantly; most analysts accredit that to the “Trump Factor.”
Recently, MSNBC has refused to inform their audience about the offensive comments that Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax allegedly made about his accuser. NBC stated that in a closed discussion about a woman accusing Fairfax of sexual assault, the Democratic Lieutenant Governor shouted, “F*** that b****.” While other major news outlets disclosed the specifics of the comments Fairfax made, MSNBC only stated the charges against him and an indistinct reference to the situation by a visitor. Neither included the comments by the Lieutenant Governor. This shows that MSNBC omitted this information from their coverage of this topic, which shows that they view issues from a democratic perspective.
In the most recent version of the media bias chart, very few news sources are neutral. It is essential to be knowledgeable of the bias that occurs in the media today. There is a crisis in the media outlets; most reporters trend to skew left or right in favor of one side over another and not tell the whole story. It has always affected the way people vote and view politics. Public trust in the media has seen a major drop since the media has started opining stories instead of reporting accurately. This is problematic that Americans cannot trust what the media states, and it has led to lower voter turnouts.
